Power Cats

Ted Hood Yacht Design's Heavy Displacement Power Cat Series

“I have been studying Power Catamarans for years. I feel that Power Cats have a big future in the powerboat market, but I haven’t seen a design that meets the potential that I feel is possible. Some years ago, I designed a 52’ Cat and had it built with heavy displacement, long and narrow low-resistant hulls to carry weight. Planning style hulls cannot carry weight, plus they are not as comfortable and seaworthy as displacement hulls. A couple of years ago we designed and built a 55’ cat with the bow that extended forward underwater and added 3’ to the stern, plus 3 knots in speed. We have improved the displacement cat. Most cats are not designed or built for rough seas. Heavy displacement cats have lots of comfortable space and standup engine rooms. Ours have staterooms with private heads and showers and inside/outside living & dining areas with a galley in-between. Economy cruising at 10 knots and speeds up to 25 knots plus, something no other Cat can do.”–Ted Hood

Drawing on decades of success and experience in design, Ted Hood has yet again improved on his well received Power Catamaran design to include updates sure to impress the most discerning of yachtsmen. Realizing the great potential of the catamaran market, the THYD Power Cat boasts a narrow hull with a full length beam ratio of 12:1 creating very little resistance through the water, and top speeds of up to 25 knots. While a 40’ waterline monohull with a 3’ beam would have little stability and minimal accommodation space, designing a multihull from this shape creates a low resistance hull with large beam, loads of deck space, spacious accommodations & entertaining spaces and stability superior to any monohull- all with excellent fuel economy.

All staterooms are above the waterline level, allowing for much wider accommodations. Bunks are all at a comfortable sitting level of 2 feet off of the floor with plenty of space for maneuvering within each stateroom. As with all Ted Hood designs, each stateroom has its own private head and sink with attached separate shower and sink stall.

The open floor plan of the salon and pilothouse are designed for usability. Commanding 360 degree views of the surroundings (from a slight elevation in pilothouse) allow you to take in the beauty of exterior scenery from any vantage point. Large opening windows provide natural ventilation to enjoy fresh ocean breezes. The forward raked pilothouse windows allow for a drier view and keep bright sun off of the instrument and control panels.

The line of THYD Power Catamarans are designed to be ocean-going yachts to take you anywhere, capable of crossing the Atlantic and averaging 10-12 knots with a normal cruising speed of 18-20 knots. Contemporary styling, ease of operation, exceptional accommodations, modern technology, and outstanding sea-worthiness combine to create a truly unique boating experience sure to bring enjoyment to its owners and guests for years to come.
